Having begun the final round three shots off the lead, Aberg finished on five under par for the week, tied for ninth place and five shots behind the eventual winner, Ryan Fox of New Zealand.

Bogeys on holes three and seven were costly for the Swede, even if he responded with a couple of birdies later in the round. Inaccuracy with his putting really prevented him from mounting the final-round challenge he needed in order to contest the victory, something he noted when speaking to the media after reaching the clubhouse.

"I think I hit okay shots every now and then, but I didn't get close enough to the pins to get any really good birdie chances. Relying on sinking 10-metre putts is quite difficult in the long run," he admitted.

However, the 26-year-old remained optimistic after completing his final round, claiming to still be satisfied with what is another top 10 finish in one of golf's most prestigious events.

"Overall, I'm relatively happy with how I played - but I'd definitely like to do it a little better," he told Aftonbladet.

Fellow Swede Axel Noren finished The Open two shots further back, tied in 18th place, after a final round of two-under par.
