The stage is set for a historic finale at Roland Garros, as 24-year-old Maja Chwalinska has punched her ticket to the championship match, becoming the first qualifier in tournament history to reach the final.

Her journey to the title decider was confirmed under the roof of Court Philippe Chatrier in a thrilling display of grit and precision. Earlier in the day, 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva booked her own spot in the final with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, setting up a tantalizing showdown for Saturday.

For Chwalinska, the moment was nothing short of surreal. "It feels like a dream. I don’t know what’s going on," she told the roaring crowd after the match. "I won’t lie, physically I’m not feeling great—it’s so challenging to play the best players in the world day after day—but it’s a Grand Slam. You have to give it your all and more."

The match against 22-year-old Russian Diana Shnaider was a tense affair, particularly in the opening set. Chwalinska initially dazzled with a series of powerful, pinpoint winners, but Shnaider refused to fold, clawing back from a double-break deficit to level the score at 4-4.

The battle of the left-handers reached a fever pitch in the 11th game. Chwalinska produced a spectacular backhand winner to hold serve, eventually clinching the set in a tiebreak thanks to a perfectly executed lob that brought the fans to their feet.

Playing her ninth match of the tournament with a strapped-up left thigh, Chwalinska maintained her composure even as the pressure mounted. "I’m crazy sometimes, but I try to stay composed," she admitted. "It’s the best way for me to play my best tennis. Believe me, there’s a storm inside."

That composure paid off in the second set. After a hard-fought battle in the opening eight games, Chwalinska secured a crucial break and stayed laser-focused, closing out the victory on her first match point with a clinical forehand winner.

With this win, Chwalinska joins elite company, becoming only the second qualifier in the professional era to reach a Grand Slam final, following Emma Raducanu’s legendary 2021 US Open run.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s final against Andreeva, Chwalinska is under no illusions about the challenge. "I watched a bit of Mirra’s match; her game is incredible," she said. "It’s another great experience for me. I’m going to give it my all. It’s a Grand Slam final."
