Jurrien Timber to miss the World Cup after failing to recover from groin injury
<p>Jurrien Timber suffered a groin injury in March and has missed significant time since. The Arsenal defender featured in the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, but will miss the FIFA World Cup, as the KNVB confirmed on Monday.</p><p><strong>"The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner," </strong>the football association said in a statement posted on social media.</p><p><strong>"In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan."</strong></p>
Geertruida called up
<p>Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who was placed on the standby list by manager Ronald Koeman, has been called up to the 26-man squad as Timber's replacement.</p><p>Geertruida, a 21-time Netherlands international, also played in the Netherlands' friendly against Algeria on Wednesday, June 3rd, despite not being named to the initial 26-man squad.</p><p>Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen is the last remaining player on stand-by.</p><p>The Netherlands play Uzbekistan in a friendly in New York City on Monday, June 8th, at 20.45 CEST.</p>
