Jonas Vingegaard crashed after hitting a kerb on a right-hand bend roughly 20 kilometres from the finish on the 15th stage. The Visma-Lease a Bike leader suffered a fractured right collarbone and abrasions, forcing his first-ever Grand Tour abandonment.

But the Dane, who at the time of the incident was second in the race after Tadej Pogacar, wasn't at fault when he crashed and was forced to abandon the Tour de France, says his Danish compatriot Mads Pedersen in the podcast "Lang Distance". Pedersen believes teammate Victor Campenaerts was to blame for the fatal clash.

"I’m not here to badmouth Campenaerts, but when you’re the rider leading the pack with your whole team on your wheel, you bear the responsibility because they’re following you. Fortunately, no one is pointing fingers at the motorcycle—even though it took a terrible line - but you can't say that just because the motorcycle went the wrong way around, we should do the same," says Mads P., continuing:

"I can promise you that the fast line through that roundabout was obvious. It was a no-brainer. So, taking the roundabout that way with far too much speed was a massive riding error."

Vingegaard is set to undergo surgery in the next few days. It's uncertain whether he will race more this season.
